This is the part most people skip and then get annoyed about after the purchase.

The Ring Wired Doorbell Plus works without a subscription for live view, motion alerts, and two-way talk. You can see your door and talk to people at no ongoing cost.

But to review recorded clips, access smart alerts with video descriptions, use person detection, and store footage for up to 180 days, you need a Ring Home plan.

Ring Home Basic costs $4.99 per month or $49.99 per year per device. Ring Home Standard covers unlimited Ring devices at one address for $9.99 per month or $99.99 per year.

For most people the Standard plan makes sense if you have more than one Ring device. If this is your only Ring product, Basic covers the essentials.

Factor this into your total cost before buying.

Alternatives

Arlo Essential Video Doorbell Wired ($199.99) The Arlo wired doorbell offers a wider 180-degree field of view compared to Ring's 140 degrees and supports Apple HomeKit, Google Assistant, and Alexa all in one device. Video quality is solid at 1080p with HDR. The downside is that most smart features including package detection and activity zones require an Arlo Secure subscription, same situation as Ring. If you use Apple HomeKit natively, Arlo is the better pick. If you are in the Amazon ecosystem, Ring wins.

Eufy Video Doorbell E340 (~$199.99) The Eufy E340 has dual cameras, one facing forward and one pointing downward for package detection, so it catches both your visitor and whatever they leave on the step. It stores footage locally on a HomeBase device with no subscription required for core features. If paying for a Ring or Arlo subscription feels like it defeats the purpose of a one-time purchase, the Eufy E340 is the most compelling alternative. The tradeoff is that Eufy's ecosystem is smaller and Alexa integration is less polished than Ring's.

Our take: For Alexa users who want the cleanest integration with their existing Amazon smart home setup, the Ring Wired Doorbell Plus is the pick. For subscription-free local storage, go Eufy. For Apple HomeKit users, go Arlo.
