I have been using one in my bedroom for a few months now. What surprised me most is how much they packed into a $39.99 device this generation. The temperature sensor alone changes how I use it compared to older Echo Dots.

Amazon Echo Show 8 (2nd Gen, $129.99) This is the Echo Dot's bigger sibling with an 8 inch HD screen, better speakers, and a camera for video calls. If you want everything the Echo Dot does plus a display and better audio, the Echo Show 8 is the step up. Worth it if your budget allows and you want a screen in the kitchen or living room.

Our take: For pure voice control and smart home hub features at the lowest price, the Echo Dot 5th Gen wins. Step up to the Nest Hub if you want Google and a screen. Step up to the Echo Show 8 if you want Amazon and a screen.

Who This Is For

This is the one I point beginners to when they ask where to start with smart home.

It gives you voice control, a basic Zigbee hub, room temperature tracking, and Alexa routines all in one device for under $50. That covers most of what a new smart home setup actually needs day to day.

If you are already deep in Google's ecosystem with a Nest speaker and Google Home app, stick with Google. But if you are starting fresh and have no preference, Alexa is the easier onboarding experience and the Echo Dot is the best value entry point into it.
